What do I need to do once I've moved in?

You have chosen a BGP apartment and are getting ready for your big move? Well, just for you, we have put together a number of tips that will spare you unnecessary stress and make sure you can concentrate on enjoying your new home from the second you move in.

Here are 7 things you should bear in mind:

  1. Let the authorities know your new address
    Once you have moved into your new apartment you are required by law to let the “Einwohnermeldeamt” know your new address. You should make sure you do this within the first two weeks, although the exact time limit varies from city to city. If you miss your city's deadline, you could be in line for a fine of up to €100. When you go to the “Einwohnermeldeamt” you'll need to take photographic identification (ID card or passport), a completed registration form, your new lease and enough cash to cover any registration fees.   2. Register for gas and electricity
    When you move into a new apartment you should always allow enough time to find gas and electricity suppliers. In most cases you can set everything up easily and quickly online. Alternatively, you can sign up for new suppliers over the phone or in one of their local high-street stores. Moving into a new apartment is also the perfect time to compare suppliers – maybe you can switch to a better-value supplier?   3. Don't forget about telephone and Internet!
    Most telephone and internet companies make it fairly easy for you to transfer your existing contract over to your new address. Nevertheless, it can sometimes take between three or four weeks to get everything sorted out, so you should let your supplier know well in advance of your move.   4. Remember to get your post forwarded to your new address
    You don't want any important post to go missing or be returned to its sender, so it's a good idea to have your post forwarded from your old address. You can set up a “Nachsendeantrag” online with Deutsche Post. It costs €20 to have post forwarded for six months. It's also possible to set up post forwarding for up to two years. It's a good idea to make use of this service as it gives you extra time to tell your friends, family, service providers and the authorities about your new address. Don't forget to make sure that your name also appears on your letter box and door bell. Otherwise you won't get post delivered to your new address.

  5. Set up a direct debit for your rent
    Let your bank know that you want to set up a direct debit to pay your rent. This will ensure that your rent is transferred to your landlord on time each month without you having to give it a second thought. You can set up direct debits online or in person at your bank.

  6. Leave a spare key with friends or family
    It never hurts to leave a spare key with friends or family. In an emergency this will save you time and the cost of a locksmith.

  7. Last but not least:
    Introduce yourself to your new neighbours and make sure you say “Hi!” when you see them! It's always a good idea to get on with your neighbours. A pleasant and friendly neighbourhood will help to make you feel more at home in your new apartment.
